Discernment Counseling
Clarity Before Commitment.
When one partner is leaning toward ending the relationship and the other wants to preserve it, traditional couples therapy may not be the right starting point.
Discernment Counseling is a short-term (2-5 sessions), structured process designed to help couples gain clarity about their relationship, understand how they arrived at this crossroads, and determine the most thoughtful path forward.
OVERVIEW
Couples at the crossroads.
Few relationship decisions carry more weight than deciding whether to stay together or separate. When one partner is uncertain about the future of the relationship, conversations often become repetitive, emotionally charged, or stuck in the same cycle.
Discernment Counseling is not designed to solve every relationship problem. Its purpose is to create clarity. Rather than debating whether to stay or leave, or commit to couples counseling, couples work with a trained therapist to better understand the relationship, the patterns that contributed to the current situation, and the options available moving forward.
At Better Being Psychology Group, we help couples move beyond confusion and reactivity so they can make informed decisions with greater confidence, understanding, and intention.
CLARITY BEFORE COMMITMENT
What discernment counseling can offer.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT ON THE SAME PAGE.
What brings couples to discernment counseling.
Discernment Counseling is specifically designed for couples who are uncertain about the future of their relationship. Often, one partner is leaning toward leaving while the other wants to continue working on the relationship. The goal is not to convince either person what to do. The goal is clarity.
One Partner Wants Out. The Other Doesn't
Many couples seek Discernment Counseling when one partner is considering separation or divorce while the other hopes to repair the relationship. This process helps both individuals better understand how they arrived at this point and what options exist moving forward.
You're Stuck in the Same Conversation
When discussions about the future become repetitive, emotional, or unproductive, it can be difficult to make thoughtful decisions. Discernment Counseling creates structure around these conversations and helps couples move beyond the same cycle.
Trust Has Been Damaged
Infidelity, secrecy, repeated conflict, or unresolved relationship injuries can leave couples questioning whether the relationship can recover. Discernment Counseling helps explore whether repair is possible and what it would require.
You've Tried Couples Therapy Before
Some couples arrive after previous counseling experiences failed to create lasting change. Discernment Counseling focuses less on solving relationship issues immediately and more on understanding the path forward.
Major Life Changes Have Shifted in the Relationship
Parenthood, career changes, caregiving responsibilities, relocation, illness, or other significant transitions can create strain and uncertainty. This process helps couples evaluate how those changes have affected the relationship and what comes next.
You Need Clarity Before Making a Permanent Decision
Divorce and separation are significant decisions. Discernment Counseling helps couples slow down, gain perspective, and make thoughtful choices rather than reacting in the middle of a crisis.

that fits your life.
READY WHEN YOU ARE
The Goal Isn't Pressure. It's Clarity.
You don’t have to make one of the most important decisions of your life while feeling overwhelmed, reactive, or uncertain.
Discernment Counseling helps couples better understand their relationship, their options, and the path forward—whether that means rebuilding the relationship or parting ways with greater understanding and confidence.
