Man in a Virtual Teletherapy session in the comfort of his own home

What is Teletherapy?

Comfort & Flexibility

Teletherapy or virtual therapy allows you the ability to connect with me from the privacy and comfort of your own home. Each time we are scheduled to meet you will receive an email with a unique link to the HIPPA complaint telehealth platform. It is easy and user friendly and we are here to provide technical assistance if needed.

Effectiveness

Teletherapy has been used by psychologist since the 1960’s. Over time, there have been several studies that have noted the usefulness and effectiveness of teletherapy. In fact, it is as beneficial as in person therapy!

  • What to expect when you call or email the office for an initial appointment?
We will speak with you personally to gather some information in order to further understand how we can help you. You may ask for a particular therapist or we will recommend a therapist based on the information you provide during the call. If you email us or complete the online contact form you will receive an email with a request a time to speak further by phone.
  • How do I know which therapist is the best fit for me?
When you first reach out to our practice via email or phone, one of our therapists will reach out to you to discuss what is bringing you to therapy. During this initial conversation we will screen for which therapist may be the best fit for you. Fit is dependent upon what you are hoping to accomplish in therapy, your availability and your budget. If you already which therapist you’d like to work with, just let us know. Once you meet with your therapist, if you believe it is not a good fit, please just let us know and we can offer you some other options.
  • Do you accept insurance?
Better Being does not accept insurance. We believe that we can offer our clients more flexibility with appointments and increased privacy. This also enables us to work directly for you and not the insurance company. Some insurance companies and plans do allow for reimbursement of out of network providers or for the cost of your sessions to go toward your deductible. We encourage you to call you insurance company to further understand your specific benefits. We will gladly provide you with a receipt of services and payments that will include all information required by the insurance companies for you to submit at your convivence. Psychotherapy is an allowable expense for your Health Spending or Flexible Spending Accounts as well.

  • Is teletherapy effective? And can EMDR Therapy be done via teletherapy?
Teletherapy, or counseling done via a secure HIPAA compliant video platform, is highly effective and now supported by a growing body of research. In addition to the research showing its effectiveness, many of our clients prefer teletherapy due to convenience and not having to drive to another appointment. Teletherapy also allows us to offer our specialized services to those in areas of the country who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this type of care. Some clients also prefer to have sessions via teletherapy because they can be in the comfort of their own home. Research also indicates that the therapeutic alliance (the bond between therapist and client) can be effectively established through teletherapy platforms, leading to positive outcomes (Berger, 2016). Many studies have consistently demonstrated that teletherapy can be as effective as traditional in-person therapy for a range of mental health concerns. For example, a meta-analysis found that teletherapy interventions for depression and anxiety produced outcomes comparable to face-to-face therapy, with high levels of client satisfaction (Andrews et al., 2018). Another study highlighted teletherapy’s efficacy in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), showing significant symptom reduction through video-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) (Morland et al., 2015). And yes! Even EMDR therapy can be provided via teletherapy. Emerging research, especially since the pivot to teletherapy during COVID, also supports EMDR therapy’s efficacy when delivered via teletherapy (Acarturk et al., 2016; Adams et al., 2020; McGowan et al., 2021; Safarabad et al., 2023; and Yunitri et al., 2022). These findings highlight that EMDR’s structured protocol can be successfully adapted to virtual platforms for a range of clinical issues among diverse populations.
  • What can I expect during my first session?
We use a HIPAA compliant platform called Sessions Health. Once you book your first session, you will receive a link to your Sessions Health to complete the intake paperwork. Please complete your intake paperwork at least 24 hours before your first appointment so your therapist has time to review your forms. During your initial appointment, your therapist will ask several questions including what has brought you to therapy. If time allows, the therapist will also gather background information to further understand your concern. Generally the first few sessions are an assessment of the presenting problem and an opportunity for us to explore your history and its connection to why you are seeking therapy.
  • How can I make the most of my first appointment?
We recommend you reflecting on the following questions in order to make the most of your first appointment: 1) What made you decide to call for services? and 2) What do you want to get out of therapy? If this is a hard question to answer, think about the top three most pressing concerns you want addressed in therapy. Do not worry if these questions are difficult to answer. Merely use them to reflect. We can work on these answers collaboratively in session.
  • What issues do couples usually work on in therapy?

  • What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals reprocess and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is now widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, phobias, attachment traumas and other emotional challenges (Shapiro, 2018). EMDR therapy works by helping the brain reprocess distressing memories that may be "stuck," causing ongoing emotional pain or symptoms. During sessions, an EMDR therapist guides you through recalling specific memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, taps, or sounds. This process helps reduce the emotional intensity of the memory, allowing you to integrate it in a healthier way (van der Kolk, 2014). At Better Being Group, our licensed therapists trained in EMDR therapy use EMDR to support clients in addressing issues such as trauma, anxiety, phobias, grief, and stress-related concerns. The therapy typically follows an eight-phase protocol, tailored to your unique needs, and is conducted in a safe, supportive environment, including via teletherapy. EMDR is particularly effective because it does not require extensive verbal processing, making it accessible for those who find it difficult to talk about their experiences (Bisson & Andrew, 2007).
  • What is Perinatal Counseling?
The term “perinatal” refers to the time during pregnancy up through the first year postpartum. Perinatal counseling is for individuals and couples navigating the emotional, psychological, and physical challenges during the perinatal period. Our therapists who are trained through Postpartum Support International are able to address the unique needs of expectant and new parents, as well as those experiencing pregnancy loss or fertility challenges. Perinatal counseling addresses a range of issues including general adjustment for both mom and dad, and screening for and treating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). PMADs, such as postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD and PTSD impact up to 20% of new moms and their partners (O’Hara & McCabe, 2013). Other common issues that come up during perinatal counseling include managing stress, adjusting to new roles, healing from birth trauma, addressing trauma from one’s own childhood that may get stirred up once becoming a parent, rebuilding sexual and emotional intimacy and navigating other relationship changes.
  • What is Fertility Counseling?
Fertility counseling is support for individuals and couples navigating the emotional, psychological, and relational challenges associated with fertility issues, such as infertility, assisted reproductive treatments (e.g., IVF), pregnancy loss, and family-building decisions. Fertility counseling addresses a range of concerns, including grief and loss from miscarriage or failed treatments, anxiety and stress related to fertility challenges, and relationship strain caused by differing coping styles or treatment decisions (Domar et al., 2012). It also supports individuals exploring options like adoption, donor conception, or choosing to live child-free, helping them process decisions with clarity and confidence (Peterson et al., 2012).
  • Do you offer internships or jobs for pre-licensed therapists?
We do not offer internships or jobs for pre-licensed therapists. Because we are a specialty practice, we have found that interns and pre-licensed therapists are not a good fit for the types of clients who seek our services.
